"It's hard out there. Boats are making both sides work. Roll for the instantaneous wind, not the average, because it's really puffy," coached captain and A division skipper Mark Anders as he handed B-division crew and fellow senior Tatsuma-Woo Kawaguchi the bailor. Following a solid A-division rotation, junior skipper Oscar Jasklowski's nerves seemed to be getting to him as he limped across the line in 17th in both of his first two races. "I really shat the bed on that rotation. And that late 70's FJ wasn't helping me out either," muttered a frustrated Jasklowski as he handed to boat off to a UC Irvine Anteater. In JV, senior skipper Eric Dita and crew Taryn Aguiar came out flying and bangin' corners with a couple of 6th place finishes. Junior skipper Drew Morton and sophomore crew Lea Cohen were not far behind in 9th.

As the day progressed, the wind picked up to a solid 12 knots for the second rotation and a blustery 17 knots for the third. Perhaps the highlight of the regatta came during Anders' and senior crew Neha Bazaj's second rotation, when they finished 4th, and subsequently 1st. Booyah. Considering this is Anders' first regatta in almost a full year, not too shabby. With stronger winds and a focusing pep-talk from BoomStacks, Jasklowski appeared to have gained some confidence after reeling in a 4th place finish. The building wind didn't phase Drew Morton or his tree-trunk quads as he hiked his way into 7th in JV-A on the day.

Sunday's 10a.m. report time seemed to catch Anders off guard, as he had some teammates ready to go by 9a.m. Sunday's breeze started off much stronger than Saturdays, with puffs up to 15 knots, but gradually died as the day progressed until the final signal start around 4p.m. After taking a shroud to the face and bleeding all over an Oregon FJ, varsity B-division crew Woo-Kawaguchi was on fire spotting puffs and shifts, finishing near the top of the fleet five races in a row. A great day in B-division was marred by a disqualification in the last race for being over early. Sounds like Jasklowski needs to look up at his sail number more often. Morton continued his consistent sailing, and Sophomore skipper Andrew Segal torched some opponents in B-division with 4 top 10 finishes on the weekend.

On behalf of the UCLA Sailing team, we would like to give a big thanks to Mark Anders' family and Richard Fuller's sister for giving us a place to sleep, eat, and warm up after the cold conditions. Also, new crews Erin Riley, Linda Wennerstrom, Carly Olenick, and Ingrid Shin deserve a special congratulations for braving the cold in the little gear they had. We hope to see them back for Frosh Soph in Mission Bay on October 17th.

Alumni Regatta

The first annual UCLA Alumni Regatta was sailed in Marina Del Rey on Sunday May 24th. Recent and older alumni raced along with current team members in a buzzards bash format. We fielded 18 boats that sailed in 2 fleet racing divisions to determine the team racing teams for the afternoon. 8 races total were finished by the 18 boats in the morning we took a lunch/free sail break to figure our team racing teams and racing resumed finishing one round robin with 6 teams.

Barbeque was provided all day and Alums met and mingled with current and other past team members. Friends of the UCLA Sailing Team (FOUST), the alumni group, conducted its first meeting and voted on officers President: Sam Wheeler, Vice President: Lyzz Schwegler, Treasurer: Blaize Wallace, Secretary: Stephanie Spilker, Team Liason: Kelly Kephart.

This event was a great success and we plan to continue the tradition annually. This year that was not the case. Saturday racing was postponed due to a lack of wind and a huge current. Racing finally started around 1:30 in about 7 knots the wind increased to a high of 13 knots, 6 A division races were sailed and 4 B division races were sailed. Sunday saw much of the same conditions with a current that made it impossible to sail 4 B division rotations were finished and 2 A division races were finished. In these tough conditions in a 32 boat fleet UCLA finished 21st overall, 24th in A division and 19th in B division.

In A division races 1-6 were sailed by Kelly Kephart and Joana Que, races 7-8 were sailed by Shannon Walker and Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi.

B division races 1-2, 5-8 were sailed by Carmen Bozina and Danielle Ryan, races 3-4 were sailed by Carmen Bozina and Oscar Jasklowski.

Alex Adams was also in attendance as an alternate.
Thanks so much to recent alumni Steph Spilker and Steph Adams for coming out to watch and support us.
Also thank you to the Ryan's who continuously provide wonderful food for our hungry sailors and to the Bozinas who open their home and also provide wonderful food to our team anytime we are in the area. We really do appreciate all of the support we get from UCLA parents =)

Coed PCCs will be sailed next weekend also at St Francis, so this weekend was hopefully good practice for that, if the conditions stay the same.

California State Team Race

With two team race regattas under our belts this year UCLA went to the US Sailing Center in Long Beach March 28-29. Cal State Team race is the qualifier for Team Race PCCs in April the top 6 teams from this regatta qualify for PCCs. 8 teams competed in the event UCI, Stanford, USC, CMA, UCSB, Cal, UCLA, and Chapman. 2 round robins were sailed with all 8 teams then the teams were split into a top and bottom 4 with the top 4 teams (Stanford, UCI, USC, CMA) going to PCCs and the bottom 4 teams (UCSB, UCLA, Cal, Chapman) battling it out for the last 2 spots. After the first 2 round robins UCLA was in 6th place beating Cal once and Chapman twice. UCLA then moved onto the final bottom 4 where we lost to UCSB and beat Cal and Chapman on the water. After several protests were heard between UCLA and Chapman, 12 points were added to UCLAs scores and the scores for the bottom three teams UCLA, Cal, and Chapman were brought to a tie breaker that couldn't be broken by who beat who. The points were then counted putting Cal in 6th place with 62 points UCLA in 7th place with 68 points and Chapman in 8th place with 71 points. UCLA did not qualify for Team Race PCCs but had a lot of experience with the protest room and learned that that is not the place races should be decided, we now know if in doubt we should do the circle to avoid a he said she said debate.

Skippers for this regatta were Kelly Kephart, Oscar Jasklowski, and Billy Edwards, crews were Joana Que, Danielle Ryan, Corey Rovzar, and Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi.

Congrats to Billy for sailing in his first Varisty regatta and to Corey for sailing in her first college regatta!!!
great job guys =)

McIntrye Team Race

The McIntyre team included skippers Kelly Kephart, Carmen Bozina, and Oscar Jasklowski, crews included Joana Que, Danielle Ryan, and Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi.

Saturday teams sailed in light winds for about 6 races before the Stanford basin glassed over, teams waited for the breeze until about 3 and continued sailing in about 12 knots until 6:30 racing was followed by an umpire debrief and a dinner at Sequoia Yacht Club. 34 races of the first round robin were finished on Day 1. The end of the round robin was finished on Sunday morning in light winds splitting the fleet into a top 6 and bottom 4. Top 6 teams included UCI, Stanford, USC, Navy, UH, and Washington College. A consolation round was also sailed for the bottom 4 UCSB, UCLA, UW, and UCSD. The conselation round was sailed in 420s UCSD did not sail because of injury we raced UW and won then raced UCSB once for the round robin and despite a close race lost one. We then raced UCSB again for more practice and they were victorious again. This regatta was a very good learning experience for all, it really pays to sail against teams that know how to team race so we can get some real on the water experience.

It was also nice to meet a UCLA Alumni, Kevin Richards who was working with the umpire team for this event.

Thanks so much to recent Alum Steph Spilker who kept us all organized and energized with boat rotations and food runs. Saturday was sailed on a new course most of our sailors hadn't seen with a leeward gate in 3-7 knots of wind. Sunday there was some waiting around but races got off at about 11:30 in 5 knots, the winds continued to build throughout the day.

Varsity A was sailed by Kelly Kephart and Joana Que, Varsity B was sailed by Carmen Bozina and Danielle Ryan who sailed very well this weekend and got their first bullet in coed in the last race of Saturday, sandwiched by 2 second places in the 3rd and 5th races of the regatta. Varsity ended in 8th place overall, 4th in the district and qualified for PCCs along with USC, UCSB, UCI, and Chapman.

Women's Varisty was sailed by Shannon Walker and Anna Schoenbrunner in A division and Halie Kampman and Neha Bazaj in B division. Both divisions sailed very well with a few top ten finishes each, finishing 13th overall.

We sailed 2 two JV boats, JV 1 A division was Oscar Jasklowski and Tatsuma Woo Kawaguchi, B division Drew Morton and Morgan Glier, this team finished 20th and was very evenly balanced between A and B. JV 2 was sailed by Billy Edwards, Lea Cohen and Colleen McHugh in A division and Eric Dita and Martha Thompson in B division. This team finished 24th. Also in the spirit of getting more boats on the line we had Richard Fuller and Taryn Aguiar crew for a UCSD JV skipper.

That was the last fleet racing JV regatta in our district, JV still has cal team race this weekend and Oregon in April to look forward to. This was our first east coast regatta and hopefully it can continue as a tradition. Kelly Kephart and Joana Que sailed all races in A division finishing 6th, with 4 bullets over the course of the weekend. Carmen Bozina and Danielle Ryan sailed B division all of Saturday and half of Sunday Shannon Walker and Anna Schoenbrunner sailed the other half of Sunday's races, we finished 6th in B fleet as well. After a long two days of racing, both fleets on the water 18 races for each fleet we ended up finishing in 6th place. JV was sailed in 420s by Shannon Walker, Anna Schoenbrunner, Kassie Klaritsch, Eric Chrisman, Taryn Aguiar, Oscar Jasklowski, and Morgan Glier.

Spring 09 schedule

1/17-1/18 Rainbow Invitational U Hawaii
1/31-2/1 South 1-2 UC San Diego/Mission Bay YC
2/14-2/15 South 3-4 UC Santa Barbara
2/21-2/22 Women's Intersectional U South Florida
2/28-3/1 South 5 USC
3/7-3/8 McIntyre Team Race Stanford
3/7-3/8 Cal Team Race Berkeley/Treasure Island
3/28-3/29 California State Team Race USC
4/4-4/5 St. Francis Intersectional Stanford/St. Francis YC
4/10 Team Race PCCs Berkeley/Treasure Island
4/11-4/12 Coed PCCs Stanford/St. Francis
4/18-4/19 Rainer Cup Oregon
4/25-4/26 Women's PCCs UC Santa Barbara

The following regattas we must qualify for to be able to sail- all dependent on PCCs
5/2-5/3 Coed Semi Finals Minnesota and/or Charleston
5/25 Women's Semi Finals Stanford/St. Francis
5/26-5/27 Women's Nationals Stanford/St. Francis
5/29-5/31 Team Race Nationals Berkeley/ Treasure Island
6/1-6/3 Coed Nationals Stanford/St. Francis

To round off the Fall sailing season we sailed in Women's Fall Champs, North South, and Rosebowl.

Women's Fall Champs was sailed out of MBYC by Kelly Kephart, Joana Que, Carmen Bozina, and Danielle Ryan with Shannon Walker as the alternate. Day 1 blew 3-5knots and Day 2 blew 15-20 making it a real test of everyone's skills in two weather extremes. After two days of racing UCLA ended up 4th overall.

North South was sailed in the Santa Barbara Harbor and always has huge attendance from UCLA. The regatta was sailed in shifty conditions that varied between 5 and 14 knots. Varsity divisions were on the water simulateously and sailed continuously right of the sea wall. Varsity was sailed by Kelly Kephart, Joana Que, Carmen Bozina, Danielle Ryan and Mark Anders in the laser, varsity finished two days of sailing with an 11th place finish. We also brought 3 jv boats and rotated a total of 20 sailors through out those 6 spots. JV sailed on a seperate course down by the pier, the 3 JV boats finished 9th, 11th, and 16th. Thanks so much to Karleen Wray who organized rotations on the beach.

Rosebowl was the last Fall regatta of 2008 and was sailed by Mark Anders, Megan Sullivan, Carmen, Bozina, and Danielle Ryan. They sailed both Saturday and Sunday in light winds. East coast schools dominated the regatta but UCLA came out with a solid mid fleet 15th place finish. Mark and Megan finished 15th in A division and Carmen and Danielle finished 16th in B division. This was a tough regatta with a lot of very talented competition, our sailors worked hard and sailed well.

Overall great Fall semester!!

Frosh/Soph

Hosted by UCSD and MBYC, the regatta saw winds from 6-12 kts mostly out of the North-West, plenty of sun and mild temperatures ranging from 65-75 degrees. Consistent breeze allowed 14 races in each division over the two day event making for a fantastic regatta. There was much shuffling of skippers and crews over the weekend, so the scores don't mean all that much, but overall UCLA JV 1 came in 15th and UCLA JV 2 came in 18th on day 1 (only JV 1 sailed on Sunday) out of 23 boats. Returning sailors were Drew Morton, Billy Edwards, Carmen Bozina, and Karleen Wray. We are very proud of the 4 new team members, Andrew Segal, Jay Ballen, Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi, and Oscar Jasklowski, who came out and sailed in their first (or second) college regatta ever, despite only being on the team for a few weeks with minimal time to learn the finer points of racing FJ's. Also a big thanks to Danielle Ryan for joining us, helping out on the race committee and feeding the team with delicious burritos from Hector's and Santana's.

Stoney Burke

Stoney Burke day 1 and 2 started in a strong north-northeast breeze at 8-15kt and shifted to a lighternorth-northwest wind as the day progressed. Day 1 was sailed until about 6:30pm finishing 11 races in varsity, 10 in jv. Day 2 was concluded shortly before the 4pm deadline for a total of 15 races in varsity and 13 in jv.

Varsity was compromised of Captain Kelly Kephart and Joana Que sailing A division and Captain Mark Anders and Megan Sullivan sailing B division. For A division the regatta started out a bit rough with the large fleet on the line it was hard to get a good start. This team figured it out for the second day and sailed much better, finishing 13th in A division. B division sailed well all weekend tearing it up at the starts and around the course. This team finished consistantly in the top ten to finish 4th in B division. Overall the varsity team finished 8th in a fleet of 25 boats.

Women's Varsity was sailed by Carmen Bozina and Danielle Ryan in A division and Shannon Walker and Anna Schoenbrunner in B division. In both A and B divisions the girls sailed fast around the course and improved their boat speed but, like varsity, had a few problems getting off the line in such a large fleet. A division finished 16th, B division finished 19th and overall UCLA Women finished 17th

We sent two jv teams who placed 14th and 16th in the jv fleet sailing in a miriad of combinations we had Kelly Trombley, Martha Thompson, Danny Wudka, Andrew Segal, Drew Morton, Morgan Glier, Victor Weisberg, Marina Visan, Taryn Aguir and Eric Chrisman. The fleet of 25 boats was a tough adjustment but everyone learned a lot especially about starting with a larger fleet which we don't get much practice with. Everyone who sailed jv this weekend dealt with fluky conditions and we really held our own in the jv fleet finishing in mid fleet.

Bryson's

The women's team sailed this weekend at the Stanford sailing center in Redwood City with 10 teams attending the event a record number of women's teams for the pacific coast district.

Saturday got pretty windy varying between 5 and 15kts, the conditions were shifty and puffy and we started the morning with a slight rain that lifted by early afternoon. Both divisions sailed 10 races.
In A division we had Captain Kelly Kephart sailing with Shannon Walker for the races 1-6, 9,10 and sailing with Anna Schonbrunner for races 7,8. These new pairings focused on getting more comfortable sailing together and ended up taking 5th in A division.
In B division we had Carmen Bozina sailing with Danielle Ryan races 1-8. The pair were happy to be sailing together again as they dominated the afternoon with two bullets and two seconds. Shannon Walker with Danielle Ryan sailed races 9,10. Shannon new to sailing in women's varsity events pulled out two very respectable 6ths. B division managed to finish fourth.
UCLA lady bruins also finished 4th overall in the Brysons women's regatta

Sunday Stanford hosted a 2x2 team racing clinic. This informal event allowed all of the women's teams to help each other learn team racing rules and tactics. All 5 women, Captain Kelly Kephart, Shannon Walker, Anna Schonbrunner, Carmen Bozina, and Danielle Ryan sailed in varying combinations and were able to work together to make some good moves and learn some strategies from mistakes that were better made here than in a qualifying regatta.

We also want to give a huge thanks to Matt Sirignano a recent UCLA alumni who was generous enough to volunteer his time to coach our team and share what he has learned throughout his sailing career.

In addition we would like to thank another recent UCLA alumni Steph Spilker who kept us all well fed and kept the team moral high with some sailing advice of her own.

We are so proud of the job these girls did this weekend keep up the good work
